Macmillan Cancer Support

THOUSANDS of pounds were raised to help Macmillian Cancer Support nurses carry out their vital work in Sussex thanks to the generosity of those attending a fund-raising evening.
The gig, organised by Burgess Hill District Lions featured local musical talent including the Chris Green Project (whose lead vocalist Kirsty Durkan from Burgess Hill is pictured singing her heart out alongside Chris Green on lead guitar).
The evening, at the Martlets Hall, was personally sponsored by Jonathan Tate, MD of South Downs Nurseries in Hassocks. A key member of his staff has been diagnosed with bowel cancer is undergoing treatment in Liverpool.
"The whole evening was a huge success", said Mr Tate. "Not just because the generous people who came along raised over £3,500 to help Macmillian nurses in Sussex, but because it helped to raise awareness of this life-threatening disease."
Compère Chris Goldfinch, better know for running Market Place shopping centre, was joined by fellow members of Barnsies Hillbillies who performed some old favourites which encouraged the audience to their feet.

AUTHOR Mark Davies came to Sussex at the weekend to help raise awareness of Bowel Cancer. He was at South Downs Nurseries in Hassocks where customers kept him busy signing copies of his book 'Saving My Arse' which tells how he beat the disease thanks to pioneering new treatment available on Merseyside. Mark donated the profits from his sales to help Macmillan Cancer Support in Sussex.
South Downs Nurseries' MD, Jonathan Tate, said he wanted to raise awareness of the life-threatening condition after a member of his staff was diagnosed and was about to undergo major surgery until discovering the treatment offered by Dr Sun Myint and his team in Liverpool. "The day was a tremendous success both in highlighting bowel cancer and in raising money for the vital work Macmillan nurses do locally, he said."
Mark is pictured far left with South Downs Nurseries' MD Jonathan Tate (back left), Val and Tony Parris from Burgess Hill District Lions and Jo Hillyard from the garden centre who is undergoing treatment at Dr Sun Myint's clinic in Liverpool.
